Reteti Elephant Sanctuary（雷泰蒂大象保护区) in northern Kenya saves young elephants
that are found alone in the wild. It cares for them until they are old enough to be returned to the wild.
The sanctuary had been using powdered baby milk to feed the young animals and had already been thinking about using milk from local goats which costs less and is locally available. The COVID-19 provided the push it needed to try its experiment. Keepers at the sanctuary said the young elephants enjoy drinking goat milk.
Dr. Steven Chege.a medical advisor of the sanctuary.said.“These animals have just maybe lost their mother and have separated from their family.So they get a lot of psychological trauma（心理创伤），which can harm their health.”Luckily,goat milk has been found to be very good for the survival and health of these baby elephants with trauma,as it contains a different kind of protein(蛋白质) not found in powdered baby milk. This results in fewer stomach problems in the young elephants. The change to goat milk is also expected to reduce feeding costs.
Local villager Liwana is one of many farmers selling goat milk to the sanctuary. She said,“It really helps us. Many of the farmers now selling the milk are mainly women.Since we started milking goats and selling milk to the sanctuary,at least we have our own income to feed our family.”
