A butterfly-shaped island called Astypalea may become Greece's first carbon-free(无碳的)place for tourists.Under an agreement with the government, Volkswagen, a carmaker, has given several new electric cars to this island for its public services; and it will sell others at cost price to the local people. In return, the government has increased subsidies(补贴)for people to buy electric cars. Besides, the government also plans to build a solar-wind power plant(发电厂).
Different from other nearby islands,Astypalea is not connected to Greece's electricity grid(电网）.With only 3.000 rooms for visitors in small hotels, tourism is still not very developed. Many local people make a living by raising goats, keeping bees and fishing. It was chosen for Volkswagen's experiment after Nikos Komineas, the Mayor(市长),said the island needed an electric bus to test on the roads.
Most people here are interested in the project. Mr Komineas expects the number of private cars on Astypalea to decrease by a third over the next five years. He says that the local people will be able to travel on e-scooters and electric minibuses,which are connected to a mobile-phone app and available all day and night. And they will be free!
If everything goes well,a wind turbine(风力发电机)will be put up on this island in 2026. However. the local people worry that the sights will be influenced by the 200-meter-high turbine and the tourists will go elsewhere. And even then,the hybrid power plant can cover only about 80% of summer need. But it is a start.
